Lago di Vico is a volcanic basin with a surface of approximately 12 square kilometres and a perimeter of 18,8 kilometres. It is the third biggest lake in Latium and it is 510 metres above sea level, the highest in Italy.
Surrounded by the Monti Cimini mountain range, Lago di Vico is in the middle of a luxuriant area that is safeguarded nowadays for its great naturalistic value:
the Nature Reserve of Lago di Vico extends for approximately 3.200 hectares and with its mild weather it allows the coexistence of extraordinarily diversified ecosystems, full of wood and river flora and fauna.
The picturesque landscape and the characteristic horseshoe shape of the lake have probably originated the legend of its creation, according to which Hercules, to challenge the local people, drove his club into the ground. No one could remove it and when he eventually did, a river gushed from the ground and the water poured into the valley forming the lake.
Through a good road system it is possible to do drive around the lake enjoying wonderful landscapes, while severalnaturalistic paths accessible on foot, by bike or on horseback, offer pleasant promenades through the woods or on the lakeside.
